Process MappingProcess MapA process map describes the main activities in completing a task including items used and produced ('deliverables'). Process maps provide a powerful tool for understanding and communicating how work is performed. They are easier to read and comprehend than alternatives and a quicker means to identify what does, and does not add value! Process maps are increasingly used in organisations to capture snapshots of day to day working processes. Knowing how you function today is an investment in improving how you function better tomorrow - in a strategic, measured and thoughtful way. Identifying and understanding the steps to convert inputs to outputs produces better processes. It provides insight and enables staff to contribute to improving their productivity and job satisfaction. When staff generate their own process maps, they are well placed to drive improvement. Staff 'ownership' and 'buy in ' creates a huge advantage when implementing change for improved results. Having thought through (conceptualised) the steps involved in their work (processes) and drawn (mapping) the process, staff use their enhanced understanding to focus on what adds value while deleting anything that doesn't. The result is greater value placed on insight, informed choice and the motivation to initiate positive change.
"Ability will never catch up with the demand for it."
Malcolm S. Forbes

Process mapping assists to eliminate non value adding work. When staff are 'busy being busy', process mapping assists to define how to be more effective.
